Literature Text

What could I gain that would be worth my soul?
What trade could possibly present itself as fair?
Could riches, knowledge, love fulfill the toll
Of trading my whole life to deep despair?

Within a life of routine after routine,
What trade could possibly present itself as fair?
To own, and then to lose for good, I've seen
Of trading my whole life to deep despair.

I seek a self-denial and a cross
Within a life of routine after routine.
My vision is of everlasting joy from loss,
To own and then to lose for good. I've seen

A bloodied, butchered man hung from a tree.
Could riches, knowledge, love fulfill the toll
He paid in full with blood for you and me?
What could I gain that would be worth my soul?
A pantoum.

"If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it. What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?"
