Op. 28, no. 7
Hidden Treasure

My verse alone had all your gentle grace,
The treasure chest wherein my memory
Could rest securely in a covered space
And in plain sight be disguised cleverly.
Your name and privacy were to me sacred,
And so I hid them in my heartfelt lines.
Perhaps the reason, then, I've not been jaded
Is found within these pen-and-ink designs.
But treasure hoarded, locked up in its worth,
Brings solitude, and with it, lack of trust.
It always gave me such fulfilling mirth
To know you read my lines, and knew my thrust.
Oh muse, here in these sleepless, sundered times,
Do you still read my heart behind these rhymes?
Day 8 of NaPoWriMo. Been a very busy weekend, so it's gotten me behind, but no matter. I will write until I'm finished.

Part of Evergreen, my sonnet series on longing, waiting, and hoping. Based on Shakespeare's 79th sonnet: "Whilst I alone did call upon thy aid." I always have such sweet pleasure when others read my work, but even more so when those to whom the pieces are written read them...and understand.

This is such a wonderful series! It's a nice little secret to have - and occassionally share - hiding an identity or deeper emotion in a work of art.
