Op. 26, no. 11
Favor

Do not so much as my poor name rehearse;
Let me recede back to obscurity,
So if my image marred turns bad to worse
I'll keep my relative security.
A reputation's all a man could own,
And far from being able to be bought,
With this he earns respect, and then renown,
Or vile insult, though he be rich or taught.
Alas, my vain attempts to hide forget
This favor's still important to be gained,
And not by me, nor by my merits set.
That burden, may it not be self-attained,
But given as the side of wisdom's quest:
Well-earned, but not my first and main request.
Finishing up the last day of NaPoWriMo with another installment of Inner Man! It's been my first successful run, and I am stoked! Based on Shakespeare's 71st sonnet, "No longer mourn for me when I am dead."
